343 New Dengue Fever Cases Reported in Latest Week

Increased Global Incidence Poses Public Health Challenge

PUTRAJAYA, May 20 — The Ministry of Health has recorded two more laboratory-confirmed dengue fever deaths, bringing the total number of fatalities in Malaysia to eight.

According to the ministry, 343 new cases of dengue fever were reported in the 19th Epidemiological Week (ME19) from May 5-11, taking the total number of cases reported this year to 10,561.

The ministry's statement noted that the testing process for dengue fever can have a turnaround time of up to two weeks, which is why the confirmation of dengue-related deaths may take some time.

The global incidence of dengue fever has increased significantly over the past two decades, posing a substantial public health challenge. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that around 390 million dengue infections occur annually, with approximately 96 million of those resulting in clinical illness.
